In Gujarat’s Surat district, a woman killed her two-year-old child and filed a missing complaint. After registering the case, she also joined the police in search of her ‘missing’ child for three consecutive days. Police could not trace the child during the initial phase of the investigation. However, as soon as the police proceeded with the case investigation, suspicion arose towards the child’s mother, and she was arrested after questioning.
No clue was found from the CCTV footage of the construction site.
Nayana Mandavi, a labourer at a construction site in Surat’s Dindoli area, went to the police station to file a missing complaint for her two-year-old son Veer Mandavi. Police checked the CCTV footage of the construction site where the woman worked but did not find the child leaving the premises. During the investigation by the police, they found that the child had not left the construction site, they interrogated and questioned the mother about the disappearance of her child, but she did not give any satisfactory answer.
Use of a dog squad to search for missing child
The police also used a dog squad to search for the missing child but again failed to search the boy. The woman later accused her Jharkhand-based boyfriend of kidnapping her child. Police contacted the woman’s boyfriend, but his location wasn’t around Surat during the incident. Further, he said that he had never been to Surat.
After dealing with many challenges, the police suspected only the woman
The police faced several challenges in tracing the child, as he had not left the construction site, and no sign of child abduction was found. The police intensified the interrogation of the woman based on suspicion. During the police’s interrogation, she finally confessed to killing her child.
After the confession of killing her child, initially, she misled the police regarding the search for the body.
During police interrogation, the woman claimed she had buried the child’s body in a pit, but nothing was found when excavated. The second time she told the police that she had thrown the body in the pond, the police did not find anything there either. On the third time, under intense questioning, the woman revealed that she had thrown the body in the septic tank meant for the toilet of the construction site. The police recovered the body of the child from that tank.
Motive of Killing
The police asked the woman about the motive behind killing her son and hiding the body. After the strictness of the police and the recovery of the son’s body, the woman said that she hails from Jharkhand and was in love with someone from there. Her boyfriend has told her he will not accept her if she comes with her child. In an attempt to get the support of her lover, the woman killed her young son.
After killing her son, the woman watched the movie Drishyam to learn about hiding the body. She got inspiration from a particular scene depicting the disposal of a body following a murder, ultimately leaving the case unresolved. The mother believes that if her son’s body remained undiscovered, the authorities would be unable to catch her. This way, she can fulfil her desire to escape to Jharkhand and live a life of comfort with her lover.
