It is seen in many videos that the police are beating, thrashing citizens during the lockdown, but no cognisance has been taken yet. Men’s rights activists are continuously raising their voice against police brutality and calling for police reforms.

In the new instance of police ruthlessness in the Salem district of Tamil Nadu, a 47-year-old man died after being beaten by Special Sub-Inspector R. Periyasami with a lathi. The Sub-Inspector was later arrested arrested on June 23 (this year) Wednesday after a case registered against him.

A video of the incident was captured by one of the victim’s friend. In the video, cop Periyasami can be seen thrashing Murugan with a wood stick (lathi) until he went unconscious. The occurrence happened when victim Murugesan and his two companions were returning from the Kallakurichi after after consuming liquor as liquor was banned in their locality due to ongoing lockdown.

The triplet were returning on a two-wheeler, and the police intercepted them at Ethapur and was examined regarding being intoxicated. According to the Hindustan Times, because of being inebriated the cops asked them to leave their two-wheeler but the victim Murugesan started quarrelling. Then Periyasami started beating him with stick on the road.

After the victim Murugesan fell unconscious, her companions took him in an ambulance to a medical hospital in Attur, where she was declared “brought dead”.
