Lalrinnunga and Achinta won the gold medal, qualified for the Commonwealth Games

Young Indian weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga on Friday won the gold medal in the men’s 67 kg weight category of the Commonwealth Championships. In this ongoing competition in Tashkent, Jeremy Lalrinnunga achieved this success by lifting 305 kg. Achinta Sheuli of India became the champion of the 73 kg weight category. Along with this, both these players also qualified for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The 19-year-old, Jeremy Lalrinnunga weightlifter also made a national record by securing a podium spot. On the other hand, Achinta Sheuli topped the 73 kg category with a best total of 316 kg (143 kg + 173 kg). Achinta also won a silver medal in the Junior World Championships held in May.

The World Championship is also being held along with the Commonwealth Championship and Mizoram’s Jeremy Snatch finished fourth and seventh overall. Lalrinnunga had injured his knee during the Asian Championship in April this year. He had finished fourth at the Junior World Championships in May but failed to make the cut for the Tokyo Olympics.

The Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship is also a qualifying event for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. The Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship gold medalists in each weight category will qualify directly for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, while the rest will qualify through Commonwealth rankings.
