Supreme Court sought for the status of CCTV camera installation in police stations

Wednesday, the Supreme Court asked the learned ASG for the exact position of the CCTC camera installation in every police stations.

“we wish to know the exact position as to CCTV cameras in Police Stations as well as the constitution of Oversight Committees in accordance with our order”, the bench said in the order.

The bench of Justices F Nariman, Navin Sinha and Indira Banerjee also directed the Registry to issue notice to “each State and Union Territory”.

The bench referred its order dated April 3, 2018 said, “there is a need for a further direction that in every state an oversight mechanism is created whereby an independent committee can study the CCTV camera footages and periodically publish a report of its observations”, Deccanherald published.

The bench taking a hard stand, directed the Registry to communicate the order today itself.

“We also expect the Chief Secretary of the States and Union Territories to take this matter seriously and in right earnest since it involves the fundamental rights of the citizen under Article 21 of the Constitution of India.”

The court then sought the data of the CCTC camera installation before the next hearing November 24, 2020.
