After Atul Subhash, Delhi Bakery Owner Puneet Dies by Suicide Amid Divorce and Business Dispute

Delhi Bakery Owner Puneet died by Suicide alleging harassment by wife and in-laws

Puneet Khurana, a 40-year-old bakery owner in Delhi, tragically died by suicide at his residence in Kalyan Vihar on December 31.

New Delhi: Bakery owner Puneet dies by suicide amid divorce and business dispute. The incident has shed light on a bitter marital and business dispute with his estranged wife, Manika Pahwa, who, along with her family, has been accused of harassment by Puneet’s relatives.

Family Alleges Harassment and Mental Torture

Puneet’s family claims that persistent mental harassment by his wife and her family pushed him to end his life. According to his sister, Manika (Puneet’s wife) and her relatives frequently demeaned and threatened him. “They would tell him, ‘If you dare, die by suicide,’ and even threatened to evict our parents. He recorded a 59-minute video on his phone before his death, detailing the pressure he was under,” she told the media.

The couple, who married in 2016, separated two years ago and had been embroiled in divorce proceedings. They co-owned the popular bakery “For God’s Cake” and the now-defunct eatery “Woodbox Cafe”. Despite it was decided between the couple as well as in writing that Puneet would manage For God’s bakery and Manika would get Woodbox Cafe, his family alleges that Manika continued to demand a share, exacerbating tensions.

Final Call and Audio Evidence

Hours before his death, Puneet had a heated phone call with his wife, during which they argued about the business. In an audio recording accessed by investigators, Manika accused Puneet of lying and misconduct, while Puneet expressed despair, repeatedly asking her what she wanted from him.

Police Investigation Underway

The police have recovered Puneet’s phone and related evidence, including the recorded video and call audio. A preliminary investigation suggests that financial disputes and personal conflicts were central to the case. Statements from both families have been recorded, but no arrests have been made so far.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Bhisham Singh stated that Puneet was found unresponsive on his bed with a ligature mark, confirming death by hanging. His body has been preserved for a post-mortem examination.

Parallels to Bengaluru Techie’s Case

The case has drawn attention of the netizens to the recent suicide of Bengaluru techie Atul Subhash, who left behind a detailed note accusing his wife and her family of harassment. Similar to Puneet’s case, Subhash’s suicide highlighted the emotional toll of prolonged marital disputes and financial pressures.

Family Demands Justice

Puneet’s grieving mother said, “My son silently endured everything, thinking it would spare us pain. But the torture became unbearable for him. We have lost him, and we demand justice for his soul to rest in peace.”

The family has filed a formal complaint against Manika and her relatives, urging the authorities to take swift action to prevent such tragedies in the future.
