NCRB crime data 2020 reveals that women are more vulnerable than girls

The data published by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) for year 2020 for ‘Crime In India’, reveals that women are more vulnerable than girls.

NCRB has also captured the distribution of crime data between women and girl for year 2017 to year 2020 for ‘Rape’, ‘Attempt to Commit Rape’, ‘Assault on Women with Intent to Outrage her Modesty’ and ‘Insult to the Modesty of Women’.

The data is breaking all stereotypes that girls are the major victims.

‘Rape’ Data

According to the data for ‘rape’ for year 2020, although the ‘pendency percentage’ was at the highest side and the lowest rate of ‘cases disposed off by courts’ was observed, but a the highest conviction rate has been recorded which is the highest rate for the past few years. The conviction rate was recorded for year 2020 was 39.3 percent, while it was 27.8 percent in year 2019, 27.2 % in year 2018, 32.2 % in year 2017 and 25.5 in year 2016.

The figures for cases in which ‘triales completed’ under the head ‘rape’, indicates that the percentage distribution of crime for girls was 20.1% in the year 2020 while the maximum recorded in the year 2018 at 27%. The distribution percentage of data for the year 2020 has recorded 79.9% for women, which is the highest among all the 4 years for the cases in which ‘Trials were Completed’ under the ‘rape’ head.

The total cases in which ‘Cases Pending Trial at End of the Year’ for women between 2017 and 2020 were average of 4.85 times that of girls pending cases. Similarly, between 2017 and 2020, in cases where ‘Trials were Completed’ for women were seen average 3.14 times more than for girls.

‘Attempt to Commit Rape’ Data

For the head ‘Attempt to Commit Rape’, in year 2020, a highest conviction rate (45.6 percent) recorded for ‘girls’ while lowest conviction rate (19.7 percent) was recorded in the year 2016 with the lowest pendency percentage, but NCRB has not recorded the distribution between women and girls for year 2016.

The total cases in which ‘Cases Pending Trial at End of the Year’ for women between 2017 and 2020 were average of 12.36 times that of girls pending cases. Similarly, between 2017 and 2020, in cases where ‘Trials were Completed’ for women were seen average 8.73 times more than for girls.

‘Assault on Women with Intent to Outrage her Modesty’ Data

As observed in the previous heads under this head ‘Assault on Women with Intent to Outrage her Modesty’, the reported data is similar while comparing with year 2016. In year 2020, 27.9 percent conviction rate has been reported while it was reported 21.8 in year 2016.

The figures for cases in which ‘triales completed’ under the head ‘Assault on Women with Intent to Outrage her Modesty’, indicates that the percentage distribution of crime for girls was 8.6% in the year 2020 while the maximum recorded in the year 2017 at 10.3%. The distribution percentage of data for the year 2020 has recorded 91.4% for women in which ‘Trials were Completed’ under the ‘Assault on Women with Intent to Outrage her Modesty’ head.

The total cases in which ‘Cases Pending Trial at End of the Year’ for women between 2017 and 2020 were average of 19.27 times that of girls pending cases. Similarly, between 2017 and 2020, in cases where ‘Trials were Completed’ for women were seen average 10.16 times more than for girls.

‘Insult to the Modesty of Women’ Data

As observed in the previous heads under this head ‘Insult to the Modesty of Women’, the reported data is similar while comparing with year 2016. In year 2020, 27.9 percent conviction rate has been reported while it was reported 21.8 in year 2016.

The figures for cases in which ‘trials completed’ under the head ‘Insult to the Modesty of Women’, indicates that the percentage distribution of crime for girls was 16.7% in the year 2020 which is all time high data under the head. The distribution percentage of data for the year 2020 has recorded 83.3% for women, which is the highest among all the 4 years for the cases in which ‘Trials were Completed’ under the ‘Insult to the Modesty of Women’ head.

The total cases in which ‘Cases Pending Trial at End of the Year’ for women between 2017 and 2020 were average of 26.05 times that of girls pending cases. Similarly, between 2017 and 2020, in cases where ‘Trials were Completed’ for women were seen average 23.35 times more than for girls.
